Modernizing industrial monitoring software for clearer, more intuitive control

Viper Imaging provides thermal-imaging systems that help industrial teams monitor processes, detect problems, and act on critical information. Its ViperVision ViperVision desktop app original designs application connects with thermal and visual cameras to support real-time monitoring, data collection, image analysis, and alerting.

Viper Imaging was preparing to upgrade the software and saw an opportunity to improve the product’s functionality and interface at the same time. The existing application was powerful, but its outdated, heavy-feeling interface made important tasks harder to understand and complete. LunarLab redesigned ViperVision to give operators, engineers, safety teams, and system administrators clearer workflows for configuring cameras, creating regions of interest, analyzing imagery, and managing alerts.

Uncovering friction in a powerful industrial tool

ViperVision supports complex, high-value monitoring work. The software can connect with multiple cameras, continuously track temperature, analyze images against defined parameters, and trigger alarms when conditions require attention. That depth is essential in industrial environments—but it also creates a significant usability challenge.

Our audit found that the existing application did not provide a clear path from “start here” to “finish here.” New users had limited in-app guidance, onboarding could be smoother, and common workflows often required too many steps. Camera configuration was difficult, and creating regions of interest, analyses, and processes could feel more complicated than necessary.

The interface itself added friction. Navigation could cause abrupt visual changes, patterns were not always consistent, and users could struggle to determine whether the software supported a particular task without contacting Viper Imaging directly. The broader product also carried technical constraints—including its Windows-only environment and dependence on local processing, network bandwidth, and storage—that had to remain visible as the team planned the upgrade.

Rather than treating the work as a cosmetic refresh, we used collaborative framing and an application audit to identify where the experience was creating uncertainty, slowing users down, or making sophisticated capabilities harder to access.

Creating clearer paths through complex workflows

Industrial software rarely becomes easier by removing its most advanced capabilities. The stronger opportunity was to organize those capabilities around the way people actually complete their work.

LunarLab mapped redesigned user flows that establish clearer starting points, next steps, and completion states. More intentional workflow structure helps users understand where to begin without relying as heavily on training, documentation, or support.

The redesigned desktop experience focused on three high-impact areas:

  • Camera configuration: Simplifying how users connect and configure cameras while making settings easier to locate and understand.

  • ROI creation and analysis: Making it easier to define regions of interest, configure analyses, and understand how monitoring rules apply to the camera image.

  • Alert management: Improving how users configure, interpret, and respond to alerts so critical information is easier to recognize and act on.

These changes reduce the amount of interpretation required from the user. Instead of expecting people to know the software’s internal structure, the redesigned flows present settings and actions in the context of the task they are trying to complete.

Making critical alerts easier to configure and understand

Alerting is one of ViperVision’s most consequential capabilities. Industrial teams rely on the system to compare incoming information against configured parameters and surface conditions that may require attention. When the setup is confusing or alert information lacks hierarchy, users face greater risk of incorrect configuration, slower response, or unnecessary reliance on support.

The redesign gives alert setup and management a clearer structure. Related settings are grouped more intentionally, important information receives stronger visual priority, and the interface provides better context for what a configuration choice will do. The result is a more understandable path from monitoring criteria to actionable alert behavior.

The same principle shaped camera settings and ROI analysis: clarify the relationship between a user’s configuration choices, the live image, and the resulting system behavior.

Building consistency into the upgraded product

The original experience could change abruptly as users moved between areas of the application. To create a more coherent foundation, LunarLab designed reusable interface patterns and documented them in a supporting design system.

The system establishes consistent approaches to navigation, controls, forms, status communication, alerts, and data-dense configurations. An interactive prototype demonstrates how those patterns work together across key workflows and gives Viper Imaging’s development team a shared implementation reference.

This foundation helps the upgrade extend beyond a collection of redesigned screens. It gives the team a repeatable way to introduce future capabilities while keeping the experience recognizable and easier to learn.

A clearer vision, now in development

Viper Imaging’s team is currently developing the redesigned ViperVision Windows application. Because the product has not launched, no post-release usability or business outcomes are claimed yet.

The completed design work gives the team a more intuitive product vision, connected user flows, and a reusable design system for implementation. It is designed to make sophisticated industrial monitoring capabilities easier to configure and understand without diminishing the control experienced users need.
