“LunarLab’s work facilitated a more engaging team meeting experience and increased social media interactions, visibility, and outreach. The team met deadlines, remained responsive to the client’s questions, and provided regular updates, making themselves available through multiple channels. My favorite thing about working with LunarLab is their desire to deeply understand our product and culture. They always appeared fully invested in our desired outcomes, and I never had to question motivation or effort. It felt like they were a full part of our team, not just a third-party contractor.”

Discovery

Wildsparq approached LunarLab with a very specific request: help us, and our very small engineering team, become a more UX-and-Product-focused company. With limited engineering resources, they needed to learn how to grow their product in more efficient and effective ways than their current method, which was basically “build something and hope people like it”. Challenge accepted.

Wildsparq was facing one of the most common problems product teams experience: What do we build next? Specifically, how to improve upon their existing Team Meeting feature. Team Meetings are monthly meetings where a company’s leadership team comes together to review and discuss the Wildsparq content they learned over the month.

During our Product Design & Strategy Workshop, we identified the following goals and outcomes for their next product release:
  • Make Team Meetings more fun, valuable, and engaging
  • Increase participation in Team Meetings
  • Increase user retention
With our goals identified, we began our research phase.

Research

Improving the Team Meeting experience can’t happen in a vacuum. If it did, it wouldn’t be user-centered design. We strive to create research-informed designs by talking to real end users.

Our research phase focused on answering the following questions:

  • What aspects of Team Meetings are most valuable to people?
  • Do people feel connected to the Wildsparq materials in Team Meetings?
  • Do people feel prepared for the Team Meeting?
  • Would technology enhance or detract from the Team Meeting?
  • What are the general attitudes and opinions of Team Meeting participants?

After conducting UX research sessions with Wildsparq users, we learned:

  • People love the content within Wildsparq, but they want better ways to be held accountable between Team Meetings.
  • People feel like they get a lot of value from the Team Meetings, but people need better direction on how to apply what
they learned.
  • Team Leaders find the Facilitator Guide helpful, but Leaders want more flexibility with the materials and what they choose to present.
  • People find Wildsparq’s content engaging and relevant but they have a hard time remembering what they learned the previous month.

Recommendations

Through our research, we were able to identify several improvements to existing features as well as some new ideas including:

  • A way to download presentations in multiple formats so Leaders could easily customize them.
  • A way to add action items into the system to help Team Members apply what they learned that month and improve accountability over the subsequent weeks.
  • The ability to highlight text within materials in the system. Highlighted text is then shared with your team, and can be Upvoted, which increases engagement with the content.
  • A way for Team Members to update progress on the action items agreed to during the previous Team Meeting to help retain what was learned.

We reviewed the new feature ideas and updates with team members to ensure we were on the right track. Regarding the new Text Highlighting feature, one user said:

“I love that, that would be awesome. There are so many times I highlight the content I like and put it in an email, and use that content in the meeting the team. This is my favorite so far.”
