App Subscription Break-Even Calculator: How Many Subscribers Do You Need?
Deciding whether to build an app? Adjust the inputs to see how many active subscribers it takes to cover the build over your chosen payback window, plus ongoing costs.
How to use the break-even calculator
Enter your app’s build cost and choose how many months you want to take to recover it. Add your monthly fixed costs, your subscription price, and your payment processing rate. The tool shows the number of active subscribers you need to break even, along with the monthly revenue that represents. The result updates as you go.
How app break-even is calculated
The formula is the monthly cost you need to cover, divided by the contribution margin per subscriber. The monthly cost to cover is your build cost spread across your payback period, plus your fixed monthly costs. The contribution margin is your subscription price after payment processing is taken out. Divide one by the other and you have the number of subscribers required.
Inputs
Break-even subscribers = (build cost ÷ payback months + monthly fixed costs) ÷ (price − payment processing per user). This covers cost recovery only. It excludes marketing, customer acquisition, and profit.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many subscribers does an app need to break even?
It depends on your build cost, how quickly you want to recover it, your monthly fixed costs, and your subscription price after payment processing. This calculator gives you an estimate based on your own figures.
What is a realistic payback period for an app build?
Many founders plan to recover a build over 18 to 36 months. A shorter window means you need more subscribers sooner, which raises your break-even number. Move the payback slider to see the effect.
Does this include marketing costs or profit?
No. It covers cost recovery only, so it leaves out marketing, customer acquisition, and profit. It also assumes every subscriber stays active for the full payback period, so real churn will push your true number higher.
