Problem Statement & Objective

Planning impromptu meet-ups with groups of people can be a headache. Less formal events like a girls’ night out, or drinks after work are typically handled through group texts. It takes tremendous effort for a group to decide on a time and place to meet up. What happens when you show up at a restaurant, and unexpectedly, there’s a long wait? How can you coordinate schedules for large groups of people? How might we create a better, more efficient way to take the work out of planning events like this, and allow people to spend more of their time hanging out? This is where HAPS steps in to help.

Discovery & Design

Our client created a lightweight MVP prior to engaging LunarLab. The basic functionality was there, but the user experience and interface needed some work. As of 2020, the average uninstall rate for apps (uninstall rate shows the share of users who downloaded an app and then uninstalled it within 30 days of install) was a staggering 43% in the U.S. For social media apps, the rate is a whopping 58%.The first time someone opens an app, it is pivotal that they understand the value of the app and the steps they need to take immediately.

To help prevent this alarming statistic from becoming a reality for HAPS, we wanted to design an engaging home screen that helps remind people of their upcoming personal events plus feature public events they may be interested in. In addition, we created calendar views and messaging capabilities to deliver an all-in-one experience.

We started with short discovery sessions (typically 2-4 hours each) to better understand the problem space, solidify the vision for the app, and define the target audience. We used collaborative wireframing techniques to visualize the user journey, iterating frequently to create a seamless experience for the primary flow: creating and attending an event.

Once the main flows were nailed down, we began working on a beautiful design. We chose dark mode as the primary visual theme to mimic the nightlife scene, which is the primary target audience for the app. Vibrant colors contrast nicely with the dark theme to call attention to the most important areas of the app and to help guide people through the flows of the app.

We packaged all of this up into a beautiful deliverable, complete with wireframes, mockups, prototype, design system and a roadmap of potential future product features.
