Moxi

Moxi is a local Birmingham, Alabama startup that is disrupting the childcare industry by offering on-demand childcare. LunarLab designed the original MVP in 2023, and since then, Moxi has pivoted their business model. Originally, Moxi’s goal was to provide unused daycare days to Moxi members as a day pass. Instead of delivering Moxi as a service within existing daycares, Moxi decided to launch its own on-demand daycare center in Birmingham, AL. Moxi also recently launched an on-demand, on-location child care service for conferences, parties and events called Moxi to Go.

These business changes meant that our original designs needed some tweaking, so Moxi hired LunarLab for a design sprint to help pivot the app. The problems that needed solving for the design sprint were:

  1. Problem #1: The current calendar didn’t allow parents to see what days care was available at a glance. The easier it is for busy parents to see that care is available when needed, the higher the likelihood that a parent will book care through Moxi.
  2. Problem #2: Memberships didn’t exist for the MVP, so we needed to find a way to seamlessly allow parents to purchase a membership without adding friction to the checkout process.

“Thank you so much–we are excited about our updated availability views and checkout!”

Improving the booking flow

In our MVP designs, we accounted for multi-child checkout, but there were new scenarios that needed to be accounted for.

  • Scenario 1: Single child, single childcare center, multiple days selected.
  • Scenario 2: Multiple children, single childcare center, multiple days selected, all in the same classroom.
  • Scenario 3: Multiple children, single childcare center, multiple days selected, across different classrooms.
  • Scenario 4: Account for full-day, half-day, and extended-day options.

Requirements

  • Enable parents to book multiple days with a single action.
  • Show a summary of selections before final checkout.
  • Highlight pricing and total cost dynamically.
  • Allow parents to purchase a membership seamlessly.
Design updates
  1. We introduced a filter bar to the calendar view to allow parents to easily select full-day, half-day, or extended care. Changing the care type will update the availability on the calendar below it. It will also dynamically change the pricing for each child.
  2. We also created a membership paywall that is triggered only once a parent has added childcare to their stroller, proceeds to checkout, and does NOT have an active membership. We hypothesized that if a parent sees care is available, and has seen the pricing for the day/time they want, there is a high intent to purchase.
  3. Bonus: We updated the “Add to Cart” button label to “Add to Stroller”, complete with an adorable stroller icon for extra delight.

Improving the calendar view

Our original calendar view designs did a decent job of allowing parents to book care, but we knew we could improve it. From beta testing, we knew parents wanted to be able to view classroom availability for multiple days, for multiple kids.

That presented some design challenges for such compact screen real estate. Our requirements were:

  • Display classroom availability visually, making it easy to see which classrooms have space.
  • Allow users to toggle between children and see availability for each one.
  • Indicate if a classroom is full or has limited availability.

Design improvements

  • Each of the 4 Moxi classrooms is assigned a color. A parent would only see the classroom availability for the room their child would be assigned to. We would need to design for the scenario where a parent might have 1 child in each of the 4 classrooms.
  • The availability dots/bubbles shown on each day reflect the type of care selected: full/half/extended, allowing parents to quickly see what days have availability.
  • Bonus: we designed an all-new Order Confirmation screen with a custom confetti animation.
